Aerial drones come in two basic types: with a built-in camera and without a camera. If you already own an action camera that you’d like to use with your drone, make sure it’s compatible with the gimbal on the drone you’re interested in before you buy. However, many drones come fully equipped with a built-in camera which eliminates any compatibility issues. This can get you flying faster.
The camera can record videos at 4K resolution, has 12MP still photos, and a 360-degree range. You are able to record 4096×2160 at 25fps in 4K or 1920×1080 at 60 fps HD. The lens is a 9 element rectilinear wide angled lens, which is pretty impressive. You can also get a wireless, live HD video transmission through the DJI Lightbridge application.
Before joining DJI in January, Resnick spent two decades working as a TV-news producer for Reuters and then the Associated Press. He still talks (and smokes) more like a newsman than a businessman. We drove in his Nissan convertible to a large, grassy field next to a church in Oakton, Virginia, and he took a Phantom out of his trunk. He’d just come from a meeting on Capitol Hill in which he’d had to repeatedly defend drones, and he was still making the case. “See, he’s a happy guy!” he said, holding the device up to me. “He even has a name,” he added, pointing at the label on its case, which read Costello. Abbott, another of his drones, was at home.
I was not expecting too much for a $15 drone. I was wrong. After the normal trimming of the thing then it flew fine. (I lost two blades in the first hour but that was my fault.) I loved how the auto feature would let it hover without touching the sticks. It only needs small guards to protect the props.
The registration cost is $5 and it can all be done online in a matter of minutes. You don’t have to register each aircraft you own, just yourself, and you’ll be given a number to attach to what you’re flying. That’s it. Essentially, it’s the FAA’s way of getting you to agree that you’ve read its safety guidelines including staying more than 5 miles away from airports and below 400 feet.
This drone was a fun first drone. I would not say it was easy to fly right out of the box but it was a great learning experience on how to fly a drone. Since the drone is cheap it to first learn on. I flew it in my basement for about 1 month and then I thought it would take it outside. The first time I tried to fly it outside I was going and full power against the winds of 7 mph but the winds still manage to push it right into a tree. After about 2 weeks of trying to fly outdoors I realizer there was a mode called high power mode and when I turned in to I could easily fly the drone outside. The only bad thing I have to say about this drone is that it fell apart after 3 months of flying … full review
